I've got the 2.4.18 kernel up and running, but I'd like to move to something more recent. So I've been trying to compile the 2.6.8 kernel. Following the readme I did the following: make O=/kernel-build menuconfig make O=/kernel-build make O=/kernel-build modules_install install It all runs smoothly until that last line. The modules get compiled just fine, and then it bombs out saying: make[1]: *** No rule to make target `install'. Stop. make: *** [install] Error 2
Why don't you just use kernel-package to do the kernel building? It will create the debs for you, so you can easily manage them with dpkg/apt-get. Just apt-get install kernel-package and look at the file /usr/share/doc/kernel-package/README.gz for instructions.
