Re: Kernel compiling

I've got the 2.4.18 kernel up and running, but I'd like to move to
something more recent. So I've been trying to compile the 2.6.8 kernel.
Following the readme I did the following:

make O=/kernel-build menuconfig
make O=/kernel-build
make O=/kernel-build modules_install install

It all runs smoothly until that last line. The modules get compiled just
fine, and then it bombs out saying:
make[1]: *** No rule to make target `install'. Stop.
make: *** [install] Error 2

Why don't you just use kernel-package to do the kernel building? It will create the debs for you, so you can easily manage them with dpkg/apt-get. Just apt-get install kernel-package and look at the file /usr/share/doc/kernel-package/README.gz for instructions.
