Re: kernel fix for SB1500

Hi Dave,

On Wed, 2 Mar 2005, David S. Miller wrote:

Without these attached patches (for 2.4.x and 2.6.x respectively)
the test images won't boot on current SunBlade-1500 systems.

It's just a missing clock model string.

I have commited these patches to the kernel-source 2.4.27-9, 2.6.8-14, and 2.6.10-6 [0] in the debian-kernel SVN repository [1].

If these could get into the daily testing images, I'd appreciate
it :-)

Unfortunately, it takes quite a while for the patches introduced into the Debian's kernel-source to propagate to the testing images. First, the updated kernel-source has to be uploaded, then the corresponding kernel-images have to be built from it and uploaded as well. Next step is building of kernel udebs (used by d-i) from these kernel images. Finally, once kernel udebs hit sid, they will be used to build the sid_d-i daily images.

To make a long story short, if you just want a netboot image which incorporates these changes, the shortest path is to use the current kernel-source in testing to build the modified kernel-image, then the kernel udebs based on it, and finally the netboot image. The whole procedure is not very documented though :-). If you can wait until weekend, I'll probably be able to build one for you.

Please also make sure that both CONFIG_RADEON and CONFIG_TIGON3
are set to "y" in these kernels as SunBlade1500 will need that
for console and network install.

CONFIG_TIGON3 is currently set to 'm', which seems sufficient, given that it will make it to the initrd. Enabling CONFIG_FB_RADEON (that's the one which is wanted, I presume) should not be a problem.

Thanks.

PS: Could you guys publish the initrd.img file you use to generate
the tftpboot.img files? Ben always provided those and it makes
bootstrapping new systems that need kernel mods to work much
   easier.

Joshua Kwan is building the netboot dailies [2]. I'll forward that request to him (or he'll read it himself :-).
