Thanks to those who were able to a) find the problem I and others
reported, b) identify the cause, and c) patch the bug, and d) compile X
over again.

Please note that Richard's patch has now been accepted into the XFS' SVN repository, so that with the next X upload fixed packages are going to be available in unstable. Quoting [0]:
