Also a sparc newbie - I have a diskless SS20, running 2.2.20-something
that came with the SLXT diskless distribution that I used to bootstrap
debian.

What do I need to do to install a tftpable kernel?

And compiling my own kernel? Is it 'make boot', and then copy the
boot/vmlinux file to the appropriate /tftpboot file?

silo.conf is not relevant in this situation, is it?

So there you have it, supplicant. The Europeans aren't morally superior
