It has been quite an effort to get the 2.6 image small enough
(< 2.5M) to boot on my SS20.

You'll need a Kconfig patch to turn off virtual terminal support,
and I have CC_OPTIMIZE_FOR_SIZE set (which only works on gcc-2.95
it seems).
