I was doing "make vmlinux", and using the vmlinux file. I have now try to do "make image" too, and use arch/sparc64/boot/image. This cause the same problem as with your original ISO image: "Illegal instruction" juste after the message "Loading ramdisk". It's the same as when I was doing the strip command by hand on the vmlinux kernel. Problem with strip and 64 bits kernels ? Let me known if you want other tests. Good day.
