compiling a new 2.4.21 kernel

As I was reading in here, like I tryed too, make-kpkg with a 2.4.21 vanilla kernel is a bit broken.
I tried the classic make mrproper, make clean; make dep; make oldconfig: make vmlinux.

When finished, I have a vmlinux.o file, and not the classic 'vmlinux' one.
For sure it is an elf object code.
The name is a bit unusual.
So I'm going to try to boot it with silo

I then get the yet mentionede message:
Fatal error: Image too large to fit in destination
Error loading /boot/vmlinux-2.4.21

I dont find any build target that compress the kernel image.

Where do I did a mistake ?
