2.4 kernel and swap

I just compiled the 2.4.19-pre1 kernel for SS20 (SMP as I have 2
processors).  However, 'swapon' segfaults, though the  swap file appears to
be activated.  However, space on my primary partition mysteriously
dissapears over time unless I turn off swap (swapoff).

Anyone encountered this and know a solution (other than running without a
swap file :)?
