In case this is useful to someone, in the end I bit the bullet and used
RARP/TFTP from a Win2k machine using:

Lew Perin's RARPd, from http://www.panix.com/~perin/

Solarwinds TFTP Server, from http://www.solarwinds.net/

...which was relatively painless.
