Actually would think its an abbreviation for inetd. In the old days,
there was not such thing as inetd (the super-server), and you had to
run telnetd, rlogind, etc independently of each other.

When inetd was written for 4.3 BSD, the various daemons were rewritten
to work with inetd rather than stand-alone and were renamed
in.<daemon>.

That would be my explanation.
