Many thanks to all who replied. Since my machine is SMP, i refrained from using 2.4.x and compiled a 2.2.20 kernel. The compile and install went smoothly but the nfs problems still remain :-(
Also, i noticed some errors during boot:

init[1]: Unimplemented SPARC system call 69
...
cp[102]: Unimplemented SPARC system call 69
mv[121]: Unimplemented SPARC system call 69
chown[136]: Unimplemented SPARC system call 69
automount[164]: Unimplemented SPARC system call 69
automount[177]: Unimplemented SPARC system call 69

What does this mean?
