re:optical mouse

Not necessarily true. I have a Type 5 mouse and keyboard. The mouse doesn't emit anything, yet it works perfectly. The DIP switch underneath the door of the keyboard on my Type 5 keyboard is as follows:
1=OFF
2=OFF
3=ON
4=OFF
5=OFF
6=OFF
7=ON

I actually do have the special mouse pad that the mouse requires. My
problem is that the mouse does not even emit a laser beam when you boot
the system. I don't even know if it's supposed to do that, but I know
of no way to make it work.

IMHO, no light = dead (unless you are of a soldering iron bearing age and you got your scouting electronics badge :-)
