Sparc Station 4 + linux - > modem problems

Hi All

I am having some problems with linux on a Sparcstation4.

The machine is running debian potato

1. Modem

I have the whole lot hooked up and on, and every time I try to dial out
via the seial B (ttyS1 i guess) I get this:

Jan 5 14:10:39 bastion pppd[163]: pppd 2.3.11 started by root, uid 0
Jan 5 14:10:40 bastion chat[164]: abort on (NO CARRIER)
Jan 5 14:10:40 bastion chat[164]: abort on (ERROR)
Jan 5 14:10:40 bastion chat[164]: abort on (NO ANSWER)
Jan 5 14:10:40 bastion chat[164]: abort on (BUSY)
Jan 5 14:10:40 bastion chat[164]: abort on (NO DIALTONE)
Jan 5 14:10:40 bastion chat[164]: abort on (WAITING)
Jan 5 14:10:40 bastion chat[164]: send (ATZ^M)
Jan 5 14:10:40 bastion chat[164]: expect (OK)
Jan 5 14:11:25 bastion chat[164]: alarm
Jan 5 14:11:25 bastion chat[164]: Failed
Jan 5 14:11:26 bastion pppd[163]: Exit.

Do I need to do some deep magic on the open firmware ?
What setting do i use for the ports?

2. Disks (SCA SCSI)

I have added a disk to the machin e(post installation). The openfirmware
"probe-scsi" and "probe-scsi-all" does find it, but linux igonres the
drive. How do i force linux to recognise the new drive in the chain?
