Sparc 20 and Kernel Oops on chmod()!

Thanks to a spring snow storm, my Sparc 20 lost power this
morning, crashing rather hard it appears. On reboot, everything seemed
fine, the disks checked as expected, but nothing out of the ordinary was
reported... Then came the line 'chmod 666 /dev/tty[p-za-e][0-9a-f]' in
/etc/rcS.d/S55bootmisc.sh and the kernel crashed with an error that it was
unable to deference a NULL pointer, and that chmod() had caused an 'Oops'
to occur. There was some additional pointer information and such (like a
face with its tongue stuck out at me :), but it was a solid kernel crash,
and quite repeatable at that.
This is a stock potato machine with the only upgrade being the
kernel, it is 2.2.18 plus the new-style raid patches found at
www.linuxraid.org. It also has a 6GB (3 x 2GB disks) RAID1 partition
connected to it as well. All of this was working without trouble until the
crash this morning. Now, if I drop back to 2.2.17 (w/o raid support), then
the system boots and operates fine, but is rather useless if I can get to
to the RAID array. :(
I even went as far as to reformat the system disk and restore from
a backup from before the power outage, but I got the same exact error as
above.
Does anyone have any ideas what is going on here and how to solve
it? I am at my wits end here and rather desperate to get the machine up
and running correctly again as soon as possible. Thanks in advance for
everyone's help.
