xmodmap & audio

Hi all,
I recently migrated an SS10 at work from OSBD to Debian 2.2r3. Everything
went happily except for changing mouse buttons and enabling audio:

- I want a lefty mouse and use "xmodmap -e "pointer = 3 2 1"" on all my other
machines. But it doesn't do anything in Sparc potato for me (it did in OBSD
on this box) and the way it doesn't do anything is silently. Any tips?
Here are my mouse devices (/etc/X11/XF86Config uses /dev/mouse):

13:40 /home/girash 14> ls -l /dev/*mouse
lrwxrwxrwx    1 root     root            8 Aug  8 21:28 /dev/mouse -> sunmouse
crw-rw---- 1 root root 10, 6 Apr 13 12:32 /dev/sunmouse

The pointer protocol is "sun" in /etc/X11/XF86Config, I'm using the Xsun
server (does it even look at XF86Config?) and the mouse works fine otherwise.
I've got a type 5 keyboard if that matters.

- trying to load the dbri.o driver, either as a module or built into the kernel
(2.2.19), gives error "DBRI: no mmcodec found.", and catting anything to
/dev/audio gives "/dev/audio: No such device" (similar for /dev/dsp).
audio.o loads without complaint. Are there other modules/drivers I need?
Would using the external speakerbox instead of the internal speaker help?
I see that dbri.o includes a string "DBRI: Using speakerbox / ignoring
onboard mmcodec." which makes little sense to me but I'm new at Sparc hw.

again, thanks for any tips. Searching in the list archive and on google
didn't yield anything that helped, alas.
