SPARCstation 10 w/2.4.1 boot hangs early

Hello,

I'm in the process of upgrading a DNS server to 9.1.0 but it
refuses to drop privileges when running under kernels prior to
2.3.99-pre3.  I compiled 2.4.1 with gcc-2.95.2 (from potato), but
it hangs very early upon boot, right after printing "Booting
Linux...".  Architecture is right (sun4m, it fits the default I
figure), I tried without framebuffer also but it does not help.
Anyone out there with success stories on such hardware?

PS: Currently running potato with 2.2.17.
