It turned out that 5 MB are insufficient (at least for installing from
floppy disks).
With 16 MB, the same set of disks worked for me.

(But be aware of the following bug for the drivers disks:
http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=79004
The workaround given there (using floppy_split) did work for me.)
