Your description sounds like the problem I had with RedHat, I think its
related to the earlier 2.2.x kernels so I'm assuming that your running
RedHat 6, its the reason I now run Debian. After that, Debian started
appearing on my other computers as well.
Be warned it locked up my scsi bus completely and all scsi tests from the
prom reported scsi failure, it put the box out of action for a long time
until one day I tried it again and scsi was ok.
Try the 2.2.15 or later series kernels.
Debian is more stable as developers backport fixes instead of going for
the latest release, and my guess is there are more people running debian
than RedHat so it gets more testers.
