accessing consoles

on my ultra1 i cant access my consoles, i think they are running because when i do 'ps aux |grep tty'

 

root       223  0.0  0.0  1216    0 tty1     SW   Sep15   0:00 [getty]
root       224  0.0  0.0  1216    0 tty2     SW   Sep15   0:00 [getty]
root       225  0.0  0.0  1216    0 tty3     SW   Sep15   0:00 [getty]
root       226  0.0  0.0  1216    0 tty4     SW   Sep15   0:00 [getty]
root       227  0.0  0.0  1216    0 tty5     SW   Sep15   0:00 [getty]
root       228  0.0  0.0  1216    0 tty6     SW   Sep15   0:00 [getty]

but when i try to change into a console with <ctrl><alt><F1> for example than it just doesnt work ?

 

any ideas ?
