X starts up but then seems to be frozen, neither the mouse nor the
keyboard (in particular ALT-CTRL-BACKSPACE) seem to do anything.
from dmesg:
Sun TYPE 5 keyboard detected without keyclick
Sun Mouse-Systems mouse driver version 1.00
also noticed that gpm is not running
