base2_1.tgz & (s)tar = error?

Hi Eric and everbody else who's reading this!

I've problems to get base2_1 untarred on a Sparc machine here.
dbootstrap says, after "installing base system from ...":
	Error!
Problems while installing base system from ...
On the error console I get a messages like:
	<path> : invalid argument
while path is something from the NLS section. Just to be sure, I tried
gunzip base2_1.gz # renamed to *.gz for gunzip only
	cat base2_1|star
The same error again!
Then I tried to use (GNU's) tar:

tar xf base2_1

tar: usr/share/i18n/locales/tr_TR: Could not create file: No such file or directory
EXT2-fs error (device 08:03): ext2_find_entry: bad entry in directory #15990: rec_len is too small for name_len - offset=1024,inode=4202565376, rec_len=3840, name_len=64126
EXT2-fs error (device 08:03): ext2_find_entry: bad entry in directory #15990: rec_len is too small for name_len - offset=1024,inode=4202565376, rec_len=3840, name_len=64126
.....

tar: Error exit delayed from previous errors

The error messages above are repeated a lot of times...

System is a Sun Sparcstation SLC, 8 MB Memory installed
The Sun so far boots up from the tftpboot image.
HDD is a Maxtor SCSI drive, jumpered ID 5

What's wrong here??? :-OOOO Thanks for your help!! :-)
