Sparc systems do _not_ use the same partitioning scheme as Intel. On Suns,
the partition table is written in the "disklabel" portion of the disk in
the first block. The limit is 8 partitions maximum (no extended
partitions).

By convention, the third partition is always set to span the entire disk. 
The reason is that the Sun PROM won't allow access the entire disk unless
there is a partition covering the entire disk. (Stupid design on Sun's
part.) This partition is called the "overlap partition".
