Ok, I tried this:

# gunzip vmlinuz-2.2.9
# elftoaout -o vmlinuz-2.2.9-netboot vmlinuz-2.2.9

Alternatively, I also used the "-b" switch of elftoaout...

In both cases, after loading the kernel via tftp, I only get

"The file just loaded does not appear to be excutable"

and I'm thrown back to the PROM prompt. Any hints?
