Yes, this is possibility, but Debian don't have easy mechanism for backports. It's need at user understand pools and repos.

If user install plugin from nonfree and updates coming from backports. I see at installer should add suitable repo, possible pinning and made appropriate changes for apt's config files.

IFAIK Debian backports and deb-multimedia are quality repos if compare these for Epel, multiverse and others.
