I had this as well at one point. A google eventually threw up a reference 
to http://lists.debian.org/debian-wnpp/2006/03/msg00621.html (Bug#357353: 
PHP warning all over).

It's a case of commenting out a line somewhere which does seem to resolve 
the issue.
