A couple clarifications:
- - you copy the *public* half of the key to the remote box.
- - to place it in ~/.ssh/authorized_keys, you do something like
    # cat [key.pub] >> .ssh/authorized_keys
  (i.e. authorized_keys is a file -- not a directory)
