I've been working with forks in Debian and recently I found the solution to not have pristine-tar and upstream branches missing commits. Turns out you can gbp push --debian-tag='' and it will push all branches and the head of your packaging branch. So you can do this without issuing a gbp tag :-) Cheers, Charles
