I've problems with importing the upstream tarball into the repo of Bcolz:

<cut>
$ uscan --no-conf --verbose --download --force-download --destdir ../ --rename --repack --compression xz
{...}
$ gbp import-orig ../bcolz_1.1.2+ds1.orig.tar.xz
What is the upstream version? [1.1.2+ds1]
gbp:info: Importing '../bcolz_1.1.2+ds1.orig.tar.xz' to branch 'upstream' (filtering out ['.gitignore'])...
gbp:info: Source package is bcolz
gbp:info: Upstream version is 1.1.2+ds1
gbp:info: Merging to 'debian/master'

Does the upstream tarball have its own debian/ directory?

... not that I'm aware of.

BTW watch is:
version=3
opts=uversionmangle=s/(rc|a|b|c)/~$1/,\
dversionmangle=s/\+ds1\d*$//,\
repacksuffix=+ds1 \
https://pypi.debian.net/bcolz/bcolz-(.+)\.(?:zip|tgz|tbz|txz|(?:tar\.(?:gz|bz2|xz)))
