If all the image files would be in a single directory it should be easy
to move this to /usr/share/<pkg>/<imgdir> and than symlink to it.
Usually this kind of warnings is dealt with symlinks if it makes sense
to some extend.  If not I could live with an lintian override.

No, it would not stop me from sponsering if things are not as simple as
suggested above.
