ncdf is obsolete and superseded by ncdf4. Both ncdf4 and RNetCDF provide a good 
interface to NetCDF.
I prefer RNetCDF because CRAN ships windows binaries of it, too. For reasons 
unknown to me RNetCDF is built for windows but ncdf4 is not.
