freefem is the predecessor of freefem++. freefem was initially written in C
while freefem++ evolved in C++. freefem is no longer developed upstream.
freefem3d was an extension of freefem from 2D to 3D. It is no longer developed
upstream. 3D features have been conveyed to freefem++ since version 3 of the
latter.
For the time being I think we can add libfreefem-dev to mathematics-dev and
freefem3d to mathematics metapackages.
