I'm interested too in working on sagemath. I've set up a Git repository
with the old packages by Tim Abbot in
/git/debian-science/packages/sagemath.git on Alioth.

I didn't do any real work so far: I've just tried to understand a bit of
how sage build system work. Please, have a look at
debian/SAGE_BUILD_SYSTEM in the Git repository: it's a summary of what I
found so far. Feel free to go further with it, there's surely much room
for improvements. :-)
