I was not aware that MathGL is already in Debian. I'm interested in the
software but have used it only every now and then. I was in contact with
Alexey (upstream) almost a year ago since they do provide packages for
Sid. A look at the source package should that it was already in a good
shape and needed only slight improvements. Alexey was open to maintain
the Debian package himself via sponsoring. I have no idea if this still
holds; I can ask him.

Even if not, I suggest to put the package under the Debian Science
umbrella. I would offer to co-maintain the package.
