Every code I've tried seems to build with Scotch instead of METIS, just
use -lscotchmetis -lscotch -lscotcherr and you should be all set.  As
for running, I have tried libMesh, which works, but is very slow.  Then
again, using METIS with it is probably also very slow, I didn't try it.
So in my experience, it is fully compatible.

The deal.II authors modified an aclocal.m4 patch I sent them to look for
METIS, and if absent, then look for Scotch.  It's in their SVN now, and
I'll dig it out when I get some time.  It might be helpful to have this
m4 file in libscotch-dev at some point...
