Re: desktop file main category for a scientific data viewer?
Hi All;
Sorry for not having responded in this thread for some time. I have been
occupied with my "Research" (working on papers with my collaborators) AND
"Education" activities (i.e. teaching physics to college students) ;-)

Maybe one useful thing that can come from this overly wordy email would
be a suggestion that "Research" be added as a recognized Free Desktop

Dear all,
I think that Kevin really had a good idea that is exploring a different
direction than the variations on the "Science, techniques an
engeneering" proposed previously.
I have a mild preference for "Research" versus "Science" since Resaerch
can encompass Engineering as well and the lines between disciplines are
often blurred these days.
For this reason, I prefer that there aren't too many subcategories. The
packages I work on specifically can be used for diffraction and
spectroscopy analysis in physics, chemistry, biology and others, including
engineering.
My suggestion would be that this kind of categorization be started in the
most simple way and then followed up with added categories/subcategories
as the need proves to arise. These categories might be best organized as
types of activities (Modeling, Data Analysis, Data Visualization, Data
Acquisition & Control, for example) rather than under disciplines.
Cheers,
Carlo
