Well, merging all the advice together I have solved this problem.

The patch someone pointed me to (sorry, I lost that note!)
for 2.4.20 also applied to the sources that Adam pointed me to,
and both of my debian-390 systems have been up for nearly four
straight days. A record for the year 2003! That is without setting
busy loops and such.

Thanks to all who helped me with the original "kernel BUG at
swap.c:62!" problem and getting this fix on!
