How many PCs are there? If many you have to look at LTSP. If you install 
GUI's apps on 486 PCs - users won't be pleasure and  admin will become 
tearful. Only one way to use 486 - Xserver.

If there are one PC - install debian sarge and use
#debfoster abiword gnumeric
But I don't think this will good.
