preparing upload of ruby-gnome2 1.0.0 - reverse dependencies dropped

Dear maintainers,

You are receiving this e-mail because you maintain a package that
depends on an obsolete binary package provided by the ruby-gnome2 source
package. Please keep debian-ruby in Cc: if you reply to this message.

I am working in getting the newest upstream release of ruby-gnome2 in
Debian unstable. Since some releases already, upstream made some os its
subpackages obsolete, and does not distribute them anymore in their
source tarball. In practice, these packages are unmaintained. For that
reason, they are also going to be removed from Debian.

Here is a list of the packages to be dropped with the upload of
ruby-gnome2 1.0.0 that have reverse dependencies on the Debian archive,
and their respective reverse dependencies:

libgnome2-ruby
  sshmenu-gnome
  fantasdic
  alexandria

libgconf2-ruby
  sshmenu-gnome
  screenruler
  fantasdic
  alexandria

libglade2-ruby:
  alexandria
  fantasdic
  screenruler

libgtkglext1-ruby
  rabbit

For each of the dropped packages listed above, we have four options
(ordered from the more desired alternative to the less desired one):

  0) fix the reverse dependencies, if their actual needs are satisfied by the
     remaining packages.

  1) work with upstream developers of the reverse dependencies to depend only on
the non-deprecated bindings maintained by ruby-gnome2 upstream.

  2) package the latest source from upstream subversion repository [0]
separately (note that those packages are officially unmaintained).

  3) remove the reverse dependencies from Debian.

For testing purposes, I have ruby-gnome2 compiled packages for i386 [1].
The source package is available from the git repository if you need to
build it for any other architecture [2].

The plan is to upload ruby-gnome2 to unstable just after the poppler
transition [3] is over, which should happen pretty soon. Please let us
know if you have any concerns about that.
