ah: weirdness resolved, by doing this:
# cp sid-riscv64-sbuild/usr/bin/qemu-riscv64-static
debian-riscv64-chroot/usr/bin/

and i swear that was *exactly* the same damn file (of course, the one
that was there i didn't keep a copy so can't precisely confirm that
*sigh*).

utter weirdness...

looks like you were right, kb, about "it's easier to reboot"... i just
can't do that: i have over 100 vim sessions backgrounded (jobs | grep
vi to find the right one!) and over 20 80x65 xterms open (!!) - a
reboot destroys a massive amount of context / state that takes several
days to recover from.
