When I just want to see if a bug has already been reported, I can’t close the
GTK window with a close button (call it escape, abort…), in the top bar or
elsewhere.

speaking of "Escape": hitting the Esc key pops up a dialog that asks
whether I really want to quit Reportbug.
At least for me (using xfce4 as the DE)

that's probably what you want :-)

alternatively, i can use the ordinary "Close Window" shortcut (Alt+F4),
which doesn't ask any questions.

there are two caveats to this though:
- the 'Esc' key doesn't seem to work on the greeting window
- it's non-obvious (unlike a [x] button in the window-decoration) to new users.
