I tried setting SessionSockdirGroup=xrdp under the[Security]
section in sesman.ini. - to no avail.Didn't help.
Any other suggestions?

Sorry, that's all I've got. It was suggested based on the assumption that xrdp and xrdp-sesman run as different users.
Troubleshooting xrdp from the logs is not easy, my perception is that many different causes can result in very similar log entries [multitail -i /var/log/xrdp*.log whilst connecting was helpful here], but that might just be my unfamiliarity with xrdp.
