I *think* I ran into exactly this issue two days ago when I upgraded my NAS. It's really scary to notice that you can't log into your system and your only connection is the current one running the upgrade. In my case, it was asking questions along the way. I had considered running the upgrade in screen. In the end it look longer than expected and I left my laptop on. If I would have run in screen and disconnected, I would have had no idea what hit me.
