Yes, I think it should be feasible to organize some polling once RC 3 is
out. (That is, come up with a solution to achieve that, and point to it
in the release announcement, and get that relayed via bits.d.o and all
the press jazz if they're available.)

Yeah, having some stub telling users there's an increasing need for
firmware, and that they should check the installation guide for more
information… would be great!

Given Simon's excellent suggestion regarding firmware-linux (which for
some reason I totally forgot about that), this should be really trivial
indeed! I have no doubt we can make that happen at the 11th hour in case
all the rest doesn't work (without spending time on testing this right
away to make sure the backup plan works).
