I'm not sure if there's been some misunderstanding then or now, but I
don't remember the previous discussion covering updates outside of the
one discussed there, and I can't see that it did on re-reading.

(I've not looked through this diff for suitability, but your wording
above sounds like you think there was a general pre-ACK for new
updates, which doesn't match my recollection.)
