I've just uploaded libgit2-glib to unstable with a modified version of
Steve Langasek's patch that makes the same source compatible with either
0.26 or 0.27 (it will still need a binNMU when the time comes, but I've
tested the same source package built against both branches of libgit2).

gitg doesn't seem to depend on libgit2 directly, only on libgit2-glib.
The same gitg seems to work with either of my builds of libgit2-glib,
without rebuilding.

#900015 seems to have been taken off the critical path by applying
remove-mbedtls-from-pkgconfig.patch to libgit2?
