Unfortunately, yes. We maintained i386 support for 3.2, despite upstream 
dropping it. However the new storage engine, Wiredtiger, was written 
from scratch for 64-bit architectures only and never supported i386. We 
got away with setting MMapv1 as the default engine for i386 in 3.2, but 
that also broke in 3.4, making me think that it probably did not make 
much sense to continue supporting i386 ourselves.
