That all seems about right. Your description of recent major
regressions is an accurate portrayal of the risk involved in updating
WebKitGTK+ in Debian.
One minor correction: Berto mostly works on QEMU, not WebKit, though he
maintains the WebKitGTK+ package in Debian. (Thanks Berto!)
