more binNMUs for rdeps of OpenSceneGraph? -- was: Re: Bug#768199: marked as done (nmu: simgear_3.0.0-6)

Hi,

I don't know if Alberto noticed this message, I read it mostly by
chance, so copying him.

openscenegraph 3.2.1-5 fixed crash bug #765855, but as the fix is in an inline method, a rebuild of simgear is needed to pick it up.

nmu simgear_3.0.0-6 . ALL . -m "Rebuild to pick up fix for #765855"

(You might want to do the other reverse dependencies as well: while simgear is the only one that we know is affected, it's possible that others are.

Also, I'm not the maintainer of either package: can anyone ask or is the name binNMU a historical leftover?)

Thanks, scheduling.

(You might want to do the other reverse dependencies as well: while simgear

Can somebody who knows the packages better (i.e. not me) please check and
file additional bugs if they are?

According to dak the reverse build-dependencies are:

choreonoid: libopenscenegraph-dev
flightgear: libopenscenegraph-dev (> 3.0.0)
libcitygml: libopenscenegraph-dev (>= 3.0.1-4~)
osgearth: libopenscenegraph-dev (>= 3.0.1) openscenegraph (>= 3.0.1)
ossim: libopenscenegraph-dev
qgis: libopenscenegraph-dev
simgear: libopenscenegraph-dev (> 3.0.0)

I haven't looked in enough detail [yet] to see if those rdepends need
binNMUing, and I don't know if there's a clear-cut way to determine
that (especially if the issue is because of subtle changes of code
which rdepends embed, which could be also the case if they use C++
templates compiled statically into the rdepend binary, and similar
artifacts).

Maybe it's better to schedule binNMUs for all, to be better safe than
sorry?

Some packages for Jessie, like choreonoid and osgearth were uploaded
in February and April, so they were not even compiled with GCC 4.9 and
the latest libstcd++ for example. They could also be affected by
other cases of subtle ABI changes in OSG or other dependencies.

The buildds are mostly idle at this point. The biggest risk with the
binNMUs would be if they FTBFS because of changes in compiler or other
dependencies since they were last uploaded, I think. But even in that
case, it's probably better to discover that sooner rather than later,
and have a few months to test the binNMUed packages before the actual
release, I guess?

Maybe there are other disadvantages about binNMUs that I am missing,
so asking again in debian-release@ just in case. If it's OK to go
ahead, either Alberto or I would fill in bugs asking for the binNMUs.

Cheers.
