Could you please nudge nss-mdns into testing? It would normally have migrated
by now, but it has a transitional package on amd64 with a dependency that
can only be satisfied by having i386 as a foreign architecture.

This is similar to the situation for wine (which I expect is the reason
why 99% of lib32nss-mdns users have it). This solution was recommended in
<https://lists.debian.org/debian-devel/2013/11/msg00007.html>.

I recognise that this is ugly, and I look forward to being able to drop
it after jessie.

It was forced into testing.  The side effect being that if lib32nss-mdns
becomes actually uninstallable at some point, even with i386 enabled,
britney won't notice.
