Bug#698738: unblock: gettext/0.18.1.1-10
Package: release.debian.org
Severity: normal
User: release.debian.org@packages.debian.org
Usertags: unblock
I would like to ask that gettext 0.18.1.1-10 is allowed in wheezy, as
it fully implements multiarch for -dev packages.
The changes to debian/rules are as small as they can be for a split
(which is not too small, I admit), but on the other hand it is easy
to check that they are correct by looking at the contents of the
splitted packages:
dpkg -c libgettextpo-dev_0.18.1.1-10_amd64.deb
dpkg -c libasprintf-dev_0.18.1.1-10_amd64.deb
They have exactly what gettext does no longer have (modulo the fact
that multiarch stuff is now in the multiarch proper place).
There are also two additional reasons why it is desirable to have this
in wheezy:
* This will be the last release in the 0.18.1.1-* series, as upstream
have already released 0.18.2 (which of course will not be uploaded
for unstable until wheezy becomes stable).
* "No autobuilder has been harmed in making this release". In fact,
the main gettext package still depends on the splitted -dev
packages, to ensure that buggy packages (if any) that should depend
on libasprintf-dev or libgettextpo-dev (already Provided by gettext
currently in wheezy) are not broken by this release.
This the changelog entry. Except for the small eglibc fix, which is in
debian/patches/07-eglibc-21.6-ftbfs-nogets, there are no real code
changes at all, just a package split:
gettext (0.18.1.1-10) unstable; urgency=low
* Split out libgettextpo-dev and libasprintf-dev for multiarch
dependencies. Thanks to P.J McDermott for core patch. Closes: #683751.
* Fix FTBFS on eglibc-2.16 (gets removal/outdated gnulib). Closes: #693361.
* Thanks a lot to Colin Watson and Wookey, as they did all the work.
* Keep autosprintf.info.gz in gettext for now, for safety.
* Note: This is a "conservative release" which tries to be nice with
autobuilders using unstable. After the release of wheezy, the following
changes will be made: a) Change gettext Depends on the new -dev packages
to just Recommends, and b) Drop libgettextsrc.so and libgettextlib.so,
as those libraries are for internal use only and not meant to be used
by other packages. Those changes will be made *regardless* of this release
entering wheezy or not. Debian derivatives (like Ubuntu) are welcome to
do them now, as it is what will eventually happen in Debian.

Thanks.
